Recently, I received a phone call from my new great aunt in law, Lucille. Lucille was calling to inform me she is in a calligraphy class, where the final project is to frame a calligraphed poem. Throughout Alex and my wedding planning process, Lucille and I would chat love poetry, exchange books, and give suggestions regarding the perfect love poems to be read during the ceremony. Things to note about Lucille: She is extremely intelligent,stunning, fashionable (dressed to the 9's every time), eloquent, a musician, an adventurer, an incredible calligrapher (with a vast knowledge of poetry), among many other things (not to mention she just turned 90, and was one of the last people dancing at her birthday party). I could gush on and on (and on and on. When she offered to write the poem of my choice for her calligraphy class, I was pleased as punch. It took some thought (but not the deep thoughts with Jack Handy kind of thoughts). I decided a poem by William Carlos Williams would be a lovely addition to our lives (see below #1). In retort to the thoughtful/ generous offer, I decided I'd attempt to write a poem to pay homage to Lucille (see below #2).Do note, I'm no Bill Shakespeare...

Today on my way home from work I decided to pop into the Regifting store. This place is nuts, and one can expecting to find from the very best ($6.00 vintage gowns) to the very worst ($6.00 sooty, smokey, pee stained vintage couches). Today was the ultimate thrift store success. I go in not a care in the world, when all of a sudden a golden glint in the distance catches my eye. I hone in to find myself clutching a v-neck, long sleeved, gold embellished, black pantsuit. At this point you're probably thinking "what the hell is wrong with you?" Trust me, the words went through my mind when I picked up the suit, purchased the suit, and pretty much the whole way home as it rode next to me in the car (don't worry, it was in a bag, not buckled in like a passenger). An-y-ways! At home I put the pantsuit on, and boy oh boy best $2.00 spent in a good old fashion time (not to mention the button down chambray Blazers shirt I purchased for .25 cents, yes .25 cents). The good news for you, and me, and everyone we know, is that one weekend a month the Regifting store sells all of the clothes in the store for .25 cents (yes all of the clothes, smokey, sooty, pee-y, and straight up goodies).

When I was a kid, I longed for the day I could eat a hot lunch. I was a cold luncher (for life), everyday toting my food to and from school in a brown paper sack. All I ever wanted was to sink my teeth into a American cheese topped burger, enjoy a chocolate milk, and basque in happiness while enjoying school lunch cake (you know the giant pan of chocolate cake with white icing?). In third grade I somehow finagled my way to hot lunch! I passed my old brown bag (not to be confused with a 40) off to a classmate, and volunteered one lunch break in the cafeteria. Although an apron, and a hairnet were involved, the payment was one day of crinkle cut fry glory, and a corn dog.

Say it with me now "WA- MIC!" Now add a little twang (and again) "WAMIC..." now how about a little bit of when I say "WA" you say "MIC..." and so on until your really excited to read on. Excited? Whoop!
Ok so we went to The Harris family lake house in Wamic, OR. Why should everyone go to Wamic? Whelp let's just say we saw a bald eagle fly right past the window, which made the American flag look like it was going out of style (I would even dare call it majestic). Another reason, the kirkland jeans flow like water....more then the water. People say words like "crick"for creek, and when you go into the local store (which happens to be the hardware, grocery, outdoor, liquor, toy store...and so on) people look at you with a face that says "hey, you from a'roun here boy?" Just drive straight over the hill (by that I mean Mount' Hood), past the ol' watering hole (Trillium Lake), wave at uncle Henry (the large horse that's in some field, somewhere along the way), and wha la, you're there!

It's a Massive Virtual Holiday Card Post....

Please imagine you just opened your mailbox to the sight of a decorative holiday envelope (are you at the mailbox yet? ... Good). If you're anything like Alex you will use some form of letter opener, or have a precise even tare along the top of the envelope. If you're anything like me, you will rip one corner off, and try to pull the card out ASAP (the cards a little rumpled at this point, but just as good). So here we are, Alex and me sitting (or maybe standing) smack dab in front of you on our holiday card. We've attached a photo for cheap thrills (and lack of time) but the true beauty of a virtual card is the imagination factor that accompanies what's inside that card. Take this opportunity to "re-open your mailbox," gracefully (or un gracefully) open your card and imagine us, wishing you happy holidays in the best way.

A few suggestions if your mind is bogged down with lack luster cards: Alex with a cotton ball beard, and a velvet Santa suit, and me wearing snowman costume. Perhaps both of us are wearing bad sweaters, and juggling latkas? Or maybe one of us is dressed as a bear, and the other is dressed as some famous Mary, and the card reads "Have a Beary, Mary Christmas!" or maybe it's "Barry and Mayor-y Christmas" and one of us is Barry white (or Manilow) and the other is the Mayor of your town. You get the idea (or you're begging me to stop with my ideas...fair enough). Here's us wishing you and yours the best Holiday Season you can imagine!

Grandma was a an anti-war activist her entire life. It is a fact that I witnessed her get arrested protesting a war on tv when she was in her 70's ( I was 17). This was not her first or last arrest for standing up for what she believed in. She was one of four "Napalm Ladies" wearing gloves, heels, and pearls, who blocked the loading of napalm bombs onto barges in Alviso, California destined for Vietnam in May, 1966. She was arrested and put in jail and went to trial. Pete Seeger wrote two songs about them. Tom Wicker, Washington Bureau chief for the New York Times wrote in a book that the arrest was what first made him see the Vietnam War as morally unjust. He originally supported the war, but the "Napalm Ladies" changed his mind.

When I think about my grandma Joyce, I can't help but think about the rhyme she would tell me and my siblings when we were younger "Emily pemily pudding and pie kiss the boys and made them cry (of course you could sub any name in. Do note this was an endearing rhyme, not a taunt)." I can't help but think about reading Bertrum books aloud, learning how to play Casino (a card game), watching Casablanca, The Red Shoes, Catch-22, and the Gods must be crazy. Word finds in the morning, scrabble at night. Friday night pizza, Sunday morning banana pancakes. The most eloquent, articulate, passionate, intelligent, kind, caring,frank....Woman I've ever met. A Loving wife, mother, grandmother, advocate, inspiration, an honor to know and love. She will be dearly admired and dearly missed forever.

Curious where a gal like me can find the cozy, ugly, comfort of a sweater that reads "Christmas all year long" and "ho ho ho" on the same Cosby palette? I was particularly fond of your description over the phone (in more words or less:) "It started with a Cosby sweater, you know the ugly 80's color prints? Then I proceeded to glue cotton balls in the shape of a snowman, with buttons for the eyes. I glued on a stocking that says "Christmas all year long!" The back is complete with one of those giant red bows, for your door...I glued that on the back." Well winner, keep up the good work!

Second Chance Thrift

The Second Chance Thrift Store resides in Vancouver, WA on St. John Street. I popped in today on my way home to have dash of excitement to end work on. Fifteen minutes later and $4.67 the excitement was rampant (ok ok so maybe not "rampant" but you can imagine). Not only does Second Chance have real thrift store prices (I'm talking under a dollar for vintage beauties of all walks of life) it's run by a cohort of extremely friendly elderly volunteer women (in todays case, elderly women dressed in their Christmas finest, which looked like plaid sweaters, and gaudy santa and present broaches...just my type). I left with 2 records (Nu Shooz and the original soundtrack to Annie), 3 books (a joke book called "Ballpoint Bananas"circa 1973, a very lovely poetry book, and a hardcopy of "Bed Nobs and Broomsticks), and that Strawberry Shortcake pendant above. Second Chance, more like First Chance....

Lewis Heslet's latest endeavor (and by "gander" I mean watch this video with anticipation over and over on your couch...and by "over and over" I mean again and again and again). G. Lewis is one of the brilliant brains behind the 16 episode season, The Creative Lives, a documentary webseries focused on showcasing the lives and personalities of contemporary artists. Guess What Came in the Mail Today...

It started out with a ring of the door bell. The door bell always seems to ring when you are wearing a large awkward t-shirt, and tights...An-y-ways. A quick signature, an awkward glance, and in my hands is a giant box straight from the heart of France (a thank you Theo). Inside, to my delightful surprise is a sewing-esque box reupholstered with vintage fabric, and absolutely full of treasures. Some wedding sentiment here (photos of potential guests, and vintage wedding photos), some old 45s there (not to mention "Chic- Le Freak"), beautiful buttons, tiny boxes filled with goodies, jars of gems, a hand stitched pillow, a much needed checklist to ensure I was on track with the box's contents, postcards, books, and a mix cd to boot. In third grade I wrote a short poem called "When I Looked Into My Stocking I Found"it basically just listed a bunch of random, rhyming objects that were desirable to a child age 8 (I was definitely going through a Shel Silverstein phase/ was one of the only Jewish children in school... perhaps looking for a way to connect around the holidays...who knows ). Digging through this package was reminiscent of my poem (now hold on, I'm not saying it's content were comparable to an 8 year old's present interests, merely that the endless amount of goods coming out of this box made me imagine how great they would sound in rhyme form... "a box filled with goods, buttons in a jar, lps from a far, and something about steak tar tar...." you get the idea). Thank you Theo for sending this delightful package, a true weekend highlight.

Emily here! I just wanted to say I'm so sorry to hear the news about your recent clavicle injury. Whelp you know what they say, "breaking up is hard to do.... now you know you know that's true." A few things, please bring the look of the sling back (maybe a MC Hammer print if at all possible), and remember it's a painful break...for anyone! If you find yourself crying aloud on a bus, in class, or mid movie... just remember I've been there, and it's COMPLETELY NORMAL! Did you happen to listen to Radiolab this weekend? There was a fascinating story about a woman who had merged with her twin's embryo inside the womb. This caused a siamese twin living inside one body. The woman's internal organs were half her own, and half her twins, with two different sets of DNA .... and two souls (ok ok, maybe not the soul part). Perplexing, a bit spooky, and stuck inside my brain.

Oh Canada...A Harrowing Travel Tale

When my Mom asked me to drive to Kelowna, BC with her for Veteran's day weekend, I was elated. A weekend trip to visit my oldest sister, meet my brother in law, and niece. Initially my sister Dana had planed to join, but opted out due to sickness the night before. That was our first sign of a Liminity Snicket series of events. The night before, I packed, gathered the gifts I intended to bring to the hosts (including but not limited to a red hooded sweatshirt for my sister's beagle, a photo mobile, and a Pez dispenser), I wrote Alex a tiny love note for each day I was gone, and slept like a big old baby. Check, check, check, check, check. It's five a.m on Veteran's Day (Happy Veteran's Day world), I'm wrapped in a blanket, bags in hand, headed to Canada.

My mom and I were in great spirits, beautiful sunrise to enjoy, no traffic, great weather, the works. By the time we got to the boarder, we get in like a cinch (even though my mom had practice every scenario the boarder patrol might ask "well you see officer, we are merely visiting my daughter, and are only bringing homemade pickles" she would say to me in the car). And we're in! Canada is stunning, picturesque mountain views, vast valleys... Canadian license plates. We were having such good time, we were certainly going to make it to our desitination early, 3pm... maybe 2pm? We were laughing and laughing at the difference in town names and street signs (the hard laughter that you can't control, lack of airflow, and potential to pee your pants). Tell me Chilliwack, and Fukawaga don't put a smile on that sweet face of yours!

We drive through a town called Hope headed straight to the Mountain Pass. This is the point where we start lose hope...all hope (ok ok, I know it's dramatic, but it's the least I can do to compensate for the title). All of the sudden, we find ourselves bumper to bumper in a slushy, icy, snowstorm. Yes, a snowstorm, and you know Oregonians don't do snow, let alone snowstorms (that's like vegetarians eating Turducken). At this point, the beautiful sun reflecting on the fall leaves was gone, and everything was white, grey, and miserable. It was weird, but on this pass things got particularly bad. Cars were sliding off the road, there was a jackknifed semi truck, people were driving slowly past on the highway going the opposite way saying things like "turn back now" "it's not too late" (yes, just like the beginning of a haunted house). It had been 7 hours since we ate, and we were convinced if we didn't eat the Pez I brought for my niece, we would starve right there on that pass (sorry Ecko). By the time a third minivan conveying harrowing news of an impassible pass, passed, we decided to hop the fence at any chance we could, and head back down the mountain. Our chance came, when there was a small break in the median, and my mom flipped a u-turn (as she said) on the freeway "I just flipped a Uturn on the freeway" (don't worry, we were going under 10 miles per hour).

We ended up staying the night in a 100 year old hotel in Chilliwack (real name of the town). The above photos paint our one night stay... We will try again in the summer.

Traveling Wilbury

The phone rings on my way home from work. I miss the call, but I'm greeted with a message that goes a little bit like this "hey emily, are you coming home? I was wondering if you could help me with a little bike craft project. I'm trying to attach a cooler to my bike, and need your help with the sewing machine..." When I get home, the kitchen, comparable to a woodshop, tools flung about, and Alex knelt down drill in one hand, electric tape in the other... had got to work with out me. It is a fact, that tonight Alex made a traveling barbecue machine out of one bicycle, one towel, a cooler (for the food), a file organizer (for the beer....of course), electric tape, two pieces of wood, and of course a barbecue. I ask Alex what he's going to do tomorrow when all of these items are nailed, drilled, and taped to his bike. He casually put the bungee cord final touches on, and places the barbecue on his front rack bellow his handle bars, smiles and says "I guess I'll have to ride it to work." Thank you.

Will you look at these dear sweet animals? Just take a peak, and tell me if your heart doesn't melt like butter! Five kittens and two bunnies! What better way to be if you are four kittens, then asleep in a pile? And tell me, if you were a bunny in a bin of hay, why wouldn't you hang with a fellow small animal? Long ears, short ears, who the hell cares? My day ended at a feed store with a box and a bin of free these (see above for "these"). Unfortunately, my will to be a good tenant, and abide by the NO ANIMAL policy kept me from taking all of these freebies to my abode. Picture us, driving down the freeway or should I say FREEway (ok ok)? But seriously, there is always tomorrow (aka, you're all mine).
